Custom MX and A Records
What exactly is an A record? What's an MX record? What are their functions as part of the Domain Name System?
Each registered domain has at least 2 Name Server records which show where it's hosted i.e. by using these records you point your domain to the servers of a particular web hosting provider. This way, you've got both your site and your e-mails handled by the very same service provider. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), however, there is a variety of other records, like A and MX. The former shows which server handles the site for a given Internet domain and is always an IP address (123.123.123.123), while the second one reveals which server manages the e-mails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). As an example, when you type a domain name in your browser, your request is directed through the global DNS system to the company whose NS records the domain address uses and from there you could be sent to the servers of another company provided you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your domain address. Having independent records for the website and the e-mails means that you could have your website and your emails with 2 different providers if you would like.

Custom MX and A Records in Cloud Hosting
If you have a
cloud hosting account through our company and you want to switch either your site or your emails to an alternative provider, it will take you literally just two clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP offers an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you will be able to see and modify the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the standard two, it will not take more than a few clicks either to add them. You can also set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a given MX record is going to have. The propagation of each record that you change or set up is not going to take more than several hours and if necessary, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, that reveals how long a record will stay active after it's modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers
The Hepsia hosting CP, provided with our
semi-dedicated servers, will allow you to view the A and MX records for any of the domains or subdomains in your account and if needed, to change any of them or set up new ones. Handling these records is very easy because all domains/subdomains will be listed alphabetically, so editing a record is as easy as entering it in a box and saving the change. Creating a new one takes only a few more clicks and in case you experience any issues, you can check out our instructional videos on how to set up A and MX records. Our system is intuitive enough to be used by people with little or no previous experience, yet sophisticated enough to give you full control of all records and to permit you to have different A records even for domain.com and www.domain.com. If you are moving your emails to a different provider and they ask you to set up more than 2 different MX records, you can select the priority of each one.
